10 Steps to Turning Your Biggest Stress into Your Greatest Strength
It was 1981 in Tehran and I was seven years old. My mother said, “don’t forget to turn on your radio before you go to bed.” So, I turned on my radio, turned up the volume and went to bed. There was no programming, it was silent. Around 2 in the morning, a loud siren blared through the radio and frantically I flew out of my bed. With my family, I ran out the door and ran down the hallway. We ran down the stairs all the way down to the basement where other people were waiting. We were all very scared. Then the engines of a fighter jet roared overhead, and we heard the high-pitched whistle of a bomb that had just been dropped. The whistle got louder and louder as the bomb was getting closer and closer. However, you couldn’t tell where it was, because the sound was too high-pitched. It could have been a mile away, or it could have been right over our head, and all we could do was wait, and hope, and pray. Then finally, I heard an earthshaking explosion, lights flickered, the walls shook but our building was still standing. I realized I was still alive. Unfortunately, I also knew that there were others who had probably just lost their lives.

Would you agree that stress like that, night after night, over a long period of time can make someone sick?
That’s exactly what Dr. Hans Selye discovered over 65 years ago. That under long-term sustained stress, the rats developed the same diseases as humans. They developed heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, obesity, and arthritis.
But in a different laboratory, the researcher wanted to find out what happens if they eliminated stress from life. They used a single-celled organism called ameba and removed all their stress and provided them with the perfect environment. Surprisingly, when devoid of stress every one of the cells died prematurely. Their conclusion was that life requires stress and stress sustains life.
So, is stress good or bad?
That’s like asking if gravity is good or bad? It will keep your car from floating away but it will also cause you to fall to the ground and possibly get hurt.
Is fire good or bad? It can cook your food, but it can also burn your hand.
What about money? Is it good or is it bad? It can help the homeless or it can fund terrorist activities.
Finding a job, starting your own business, chasing your dreams? Good or bad? All those things come with stress.
Here’s the definition of stress: it is a force that causes a change in your life. By that definition, it is neither good or bad.
So then, should your goal be to reduce stress? Would you like to know what people look like when they don’t have any stress? Go to the cemetery. The ones underground have zero stress. Setting a goal to reduce your stress is like taking a step closer to the grave.
The solution: Get strong!
Get strong so you can take the hits and still keep moving forward.
Get strong so you can carry that burden and not have it knock you down.
Get strong so you can accept all the responsibilities that you now want and succeed every single time.
